Meaning
Mechanical deformation occurs when the platens of an injection moulding machine or the mold components themselves bow under the internal pressure of the polymer melt. While a machine is rated for a specific tonnage, clamp force deflection represents the physical movement that occurs when that force is applied. This movement creates a gap between the mold halves that the locking mechanism cannot fully close.
Machine Rigidity
Structural stiffness determines the extent to which a press can resist the push of the incoming resin. Excessive clamp force deflection leads to flash at the part parting line as the plastic escapes into the newly created space. A moulder must balance the need for high pressure with the mechanical limits of the steel.
Part Dimension
Variations in wall thickness often stem from the way the platens flex during the holding stage. Because clamp force deflection is greatest at the center of the platen, parts located in the middle of a large multi-cavity mold may be thicker than those at the edges. This discrepancy affects weight and assembly fit.
Tooling Maintenance
Long-term operation under extreme stress causes permanent warping of the mold base. Regular checks for clamp force deflection help identify when a tool needs surface grinding to restore flatness.
