Meaning
Intermediate chemical compounds consist of low molecular weight polymer chains produced by the partial reaction of monomeric units. Adhesive oligomers provide the necessary viscosity and reactive functionality for crosslinking within thermosetting systems. Their molecular weight distribution governs the flow characteristics of liquid resins during moulding operations.
These components reach their final state after curing cycles solidify the polymer matrix.
Processing Impact
Precise control of these substances regulates the wetting performance of a resin on reinforcement fibres. Excess quantities of unreacted chains often migrate to the surface of a moulded part, which creates a tacky finish and interferes with paint adhesion. Moulders adjust holding pressures to manage the distribution of these reactive species during the transition from liquid to solid.
Inadequate concentration prevents complete bonding between internal layers, while high levels promote brittleness if the crosslink density becomes excessive.
Economic Variation
Commercial grades differ significantly between virgin feedstock and material recovered from industrial scrap. Virgin resin maintains a consistent profile of oligomeric species, which allows for stable viscosity profiles throughout the injection cycle. Regrind streams frequently display altered ratios due to thermal degradation during earlier processing passes.
This variability forces operators to adjust cure times or temperatures to compensate for the loss of reactive end groups.
Tooling Influence
Proper thermal management within the mould ensures that these reactive chains reach the required degree of polymerization before part ejection. Coolant channels that maintain an uneven temperature distribution lead to localized areas of under-cured material. Inconsistent curing patterns produce dimensional instability and internal stress concentrations that eventually result in part failure under mechanical load.
Correct thermal balance remains the primary safeguard against the degradation of these chemical structures.
