Meaning
Higher alpha-olefin additive containing eight carbon atoms generates controlled hexyl branching along the continuous hydrocarbon backbone of linear low-density polyethylene. Petrochemical synthesis processes introduce octene-1 comonomer into solution and slurry phase polymerisation reactors to suppress resin density and disrupt crystalline regularity. The resulting hexyl side chains promote tie-molecule formation across adjacent lamellae, imparting puncture resistance, tensile toughness and seal strength to converted films.
The term applies to chemical copolymerisation in reactor vessels and stops at physical polymer compounding, Masterbatch blending or downstream post-reactor mechanical modification.
Polymer Structure
Molecular architecture produced by eight-carbon comonomers possesses distinctive mechanical advantages over shorter four- and six-carbon branches. Inserting octene-1 comonomer into the polymer backbone creates pendant hexyl groups that prevent tight chain folding into dense crystalline blocks. Solution phase processes exploit the liquid solubility of this olefin, allowing precise distribution of hexyl branches across polymer chains of varied lengths.
This precise distribution enhances the density of tie chains, which link crystalline lamellae together through amorphous zones. As a result, the polymer displays high tear resistance, superior impact absorption and broad heat-sealing operating windows.
Extrusion Processing
High molecular weight octene copolymers require deliberate parameter adjustment when processed on film extrusion lines and injection moulding machinery. Melt strength runs lower than that of branched low-density polyethylene, which demands specialized dual-lip air rings and narrow die gaps to stabilize blown film bubbles. Extruder drives draw higher amperage due to shear resistance, requiring processing aids to delay melt fracture at high shear rates.
Resins modified with octene-1 comonomer exhibit elevated hot tack strength, enabling packaging lines to form, fill and seal pouches at higher cycle frequencies. Injection moulders utilize high-melt-flow octene grades for structural lids and caps, minimizing stress cracking when parts remain under continuous mechanical tension.
Commercial Comparison
Resin pricing reflects a regular premium for eight-carbon polyethylenes over conventional butene- and hexene-modified commodity grades. Film converters absorb this cost difference because octene-based resins allow packaging downgauging, reducing total container wall thickness without compromising dart impact performance. Substituting post-consumer regrind into these applications degrades the performance benefits of octene branching, as mechanical recycling breaks tie molecules and broadens molecular weight distribution.
Datasheet values for octene-grade films show high puncture resistance and tear propagation values, but moulders must ensure melt temperatures stay below degradation limits to preserve these mechanical gains throughout long production campaigns.
