Meaning
Safety evaluation process termed NIAS risk assessment identifies and characterizes the health hazards associated with non-intentionally added substances in food contact materials. These substances include breakdown products of antioxidants, impurities from the manufacturing process, and contaminants from recycled materials. Unlike intentional additives, these chemicals are not listed on a formal approval sheet and must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The goal of this assessment is to ensure that the cumulative migration of these unknown or unexpected molecules does not pose a risk to the consumer.
Identification Strategy
Detecting these substances requires the use of high-resolution screening techniques like gc-ms or lc-ms. The nias risk assessment begins with a broad scan of the material to find any molecule that is not part of the original formulation. Once a substance is detected, it must be identified by comparing its mass spectrum against a database of known chemicals.
If the molecule is new or unknown, its structure must be determined using advanced spectroscopic tools.
Toxicological Evaluation
Potential harm of each identified migrant is estimated using structural activity relationships and established toxicity databases. If the substance is well-known, its safe intake levels are already documented. For unknown substances, the nias risk assessment often uses the threshold of toxicological concern to set a conservative safety limit.
This approach assumes that any molecule below a certain concentration is unlikely to cause harm, even if its exact toxicity is not yet measured.
Compliance Documentation
Final report of the evaluation provides the justification for the safety of the plastic part. It includes the list of all detected substances, their concentrations, and the reasoning behind their safety classification. This documentation is required by food manufacturers to prove that their packaging meets the general safety requirements of regional regulations.
Performing a thorough nias risk assessment is a critical step for any company bringing a new polymer or a recycled resin to the market.
