Meaning
Force-sensing shear pins installed within the mechanical assembly of injection moulding machines provide a direct measure of tie-bar load, clamping force, or ejector actuation resistance. An understanding of load pin mechanics enables technicians to optimize the ejection stage of the moulding cycle and prevent damage to delicate core pins. These specialized transducers convert the physical deflection of the pin under a shear load into an electrical signal.
Sensor Calibration
Internal strain gauges bonded to the neutral axis of the metal cylinder measure the minute deformations caused by external forces. Because the strain gauges are sealed inside the steel body of the pin, they are protected from the high temperatures and corrosive outgassing common in polymer processing. Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of the signal during long production campaigns.
Defect Prevention
Excessive ejection force often indicates that the plastic part is sticking in the cavity due to insufficient draft angles or incorrect cooling times. Monitoring the signals generated by load pin mechanics allows the press controller to halt the cycle before the ejector pins punch through the part or warp the plastic. This proactive monitoring reduces scrap and prevents downtime caused by damaged tooling.
Clamping Force
Accurate clamping measurements are essential to prevent flash along the parting line of the mould. When clamping force drifts, the pin sensors immediately detect the variation.
