Meaning
High strength nickel-chromium alloy enclosures protect sensitive instrumentation in extreme thermal environments. Within high pressure polymer processing equipment, an inconel 718 housing protects internal pressure and temperature sensors from chemical attack and mechanical stress. The alloy retains its physical integrity at temperatures where standard steels would soften and deform.
Thermal Durability
Resistance to high temperature creep makes this material choice necessary for continuous melt monitoring. Because the sensor must operate at temperatures up to four hundred degrees celsius, an inconel 718 housing prevents the sensor body from distorting under high clamping pressures. This stability ensures that the internal piezoelectric or piezoresistive elements remain aligned and calibrated over long periods.
In addition, the low thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy matches the surrounding tool steel closely, which minimizes thermal stress at the seal interface.
Melt Integrity
Corrosive outgassing from polymers like polyvinyl chloride or fluoropolymers does not degrade the protective alloy casing. When processing these highly reactive materials, an inconel 718 housing resists oxidation and pitting, preventing the failure of the sensor’s threaded connection. This corrosion resistance avoids costly downtime and prevents the contamination of the polymer melt with metal oxides.
Pressure Limit
Extreme injection pressures up to two thousand bar require a housing that resists cyclic fatigue without micro cracking. The high yield strength of the alloy prevents deformation of the sensor seat even under rapid pressure spikes during the injection stroke. This strength ensures that the transducer can deliver accurate readings throughout millions of moulding cycles.
