Meaning
Structural failure occurring without significant plastic deformation describes brittle failure. Amorphous polymers often undergo this rapid crack propagation when external stressors exceed the atomic bond energy of the matrix. This phenomenon prevents warning signs like yielding or localized thinning, leading to a sudden loss of mechanical integrity.
The mechanism hinges on the rapid rate of energy release at the crack tip, which leaves the polymer chain alignment largely undisturbed.
Processing Impact
Tooling conditions during injection moulding directly influence the prevalence of brittle failure in finished parts. High shear rates during resin fill can induce residual internal stresses that concentrate near gate locations or sharp geometric corners. Moulders must balance injection pressure against cooling duration to avoid locking these frozen stresses into the molecular structure.
Virgin resin typically exhibits higher resistance to these stress concentrations than material containing excess regrind, where thermal history and degraded molecular weight distribution lower the energy absorption threshold.
Component Specification
Material datasheets define the toughness of a polymer through standardized impact testing, yet this laboratory value rarely matches the performance of a complex moulded part. Geometric features including thin walls or abrupt ribbing alter the distribution of force across the item, forcing the material to respond under multi-axial load conditions. A specification sheet provides a benchmark for dry resin, while the final piece performs according to its actual moulded density and orientation of the polymer chains.
Material Performance
Degradation from environmental exposure or chemical contact over time weakens the covalent bonds that resist brittle failure. UV radiation or solvent absorption often reduces the impact strength of parts that initially met every engineering requirement. This eventual loss of ductility marks the transition of the polymer from a resilient component to an unreliable piece of infrastructure.
