Meaning
Saturated cyclic hydrocarbons consisting of a cyclohexane ring substituted with one or more alkyl groups are classified as specific chemical markers in polymer migration analysis. These compounds frequently occur as components of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons which migrate from recycled paperboard packaging into dry foods. Trace amounts of alkylcyclohexanes also arise from the degradation of lubricating oils utilized in the maintenance of high-pressure plastic compounding equipment.
Their detection allows laboratory technicians to trace the origin of hydrocarbon contamination back to specific industrial lubricants.
Analytical Identification
Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry provides the primary means for resolving these cyclic structures in extracted polymer samples. While linear alkanes elute at predictable intervals, the substituted ring structures of alkylcyclohexanes display distinct retention indices on non-polar capillary columns. The mass spectra of these analytes are characterized by a dominant fragment ion at mass-to-charge ratio eighty-three, representing the loss of the alkyl side chain from the cyclohexyl ring.
Industrial Source
Lubricating grease and technical oils used in the bearings of twin-screw extruders often contain refined paraffinic fractions rich in cyclic fractions. When these seals degrade during extended production cycles, alkylcyclohexanes leak directly into the melt zone of the barrel. The high processing temperatures of the extruder facilitate the dissolution of these hydrocarbons throughout the resin matrix.
This contamination can lead to taste and odor issues in the final moulded articles.
Regulatory Limit
European food safety guidelines establish strict thresholds for the migration of saturated mineral oil fractions into food simulants. Compliance testing relies on establishing that the cumulative level of these cyclic compounds remains below the designated safety limit of two parts per million. Analytical protocols require that the extraction be performed using hexane or ethanol solutions depending on the intended food contact application.
Validated packaging materials must demonstrate migration levels well below this threshold to receive commercial clearance.
